Chalk Pastels and Wet Paper

There's a Dragon in My Art Room is an awesome blog! She even posts kind comments on every art teacher blog I've been on.

Supplies:

watercolor paper (or other thick paper)

chalk pastels

music player

Mod-podge or spray fixative

Instructions:

    1. Have music playing.

    2. Tell children to draw how the music sounds. Other rules: cover the entire paper with color. No scribbling. NO recognizable objects ((houses, trees, faces, animals, flowers, etc.) Colors can be blended. Black is used last.

    3. Give children wet paper. The chalk pastels turn paint-like on the wet paper.

    4. Seal with mod-podge or spray fixative after they dry.

    Tips:

    * Have children roll the chalk on its side for a neat pattern.

    * Chalk pastels draw on cement too. You could mix up some sidewalk paint then add detail with chalk pastels.

Recipe:

Make sidewalk paint by mixing 1/2 cup cornstarch into 1/2 cup cold
water and add 4 to 5 drops of food coloring. Use cheap brushes to paint the concrete. (Dollar Tree has large brushes.)
